Fan Film: Flight From Shadow

Epic Level TV has posted a making-of documentary going into the story behind the creation of “Flight From Shadow,” a Wheel of Time short film created by fans of the epic fantasy series.  The whole project makes me wonder how this series has gone so long without some form of screen adaptation.
"WHEEL OF TIME fan movie "Flight From Shadow" chronicles the events in the "Four Kings in Shadow" chapter from The Eye of the World, the first book of Robert Jordan's bestselling series.

After narrowly escaping an ambush in the town of Whitebridge and walking for days on the Caemlyn Road, Rand al'Thor and his companion Matrim Cauthon seek rest and shelter in the Dancing Cart-Man Inn at the village of Four Kings. After bargaining for one night's room and board with Saml Hake, the duo soon discover that the servants of the Great Lord of the Dark are hot on their heels. Deceived by Hake and his henchmen, Rand and Mat find themselves trapped in a storeroom, forced to use the forbidden energy of the One Power for their very survival."

Fashion: The Lies of Locke Lamora

"The Falconer" (from The Lies of Locke Lamora)
Costumes Designs by Kathryn Sutcliffe
Photographed by James McMillen and John Danesh

This is epic.  I never thought to see such elaborate "cosplay" for a novel that hasn't hit the big screen yet.  Click here to see a video of the costumes.
"Scott Lynch’s novel, set in the fantasy, Venice-like city of Camorr, follows Locke Lamora and his gang of thieves as they attempt to pull off the latest in a long line of increasingly elaborate cons on wealthy nobles. Interrupted by a mysterious character known as The Grey King who is seeking revenge in the criminal underworld aided by his powerful sorcerer associate, they are dragged into a dangerous game of blackmail, murder, double crossing and deception, all the while trying to keep their original money making plans afloat.

Although the narrative has a distinctly contemporary feel there are strong historical references which led me to look to 16th and 17th century clothing as an inspiration starting point. Alongside historical research I looked at current fashion as well as the textures and shapes of the city itself. With a non-specific time period and a fascinating array of characters from all levels of society to design for, I was able to combine elements I liked from many different sources to create my own style for the world of the story."

"Although a lot of girls cosplay Katniss in her movie costume, I decided to wear the less seen book version."

Jaina Solo

Jaina Solo (from the Star Wars Expanded Universe) by Shea Standefer
"Here's a photo of my new Jaina Solo costume that I made for Celebration VI! It was quite a last-minute endeavor, as I had only seen the artwork (drawn by Frank-Joseph Frelier) about 10 days prior to leaving for Celebration, but as a hardcore Jaina fan I knew I had to do it! Wearing this costume was quite possibly the most fun I have ever had wearing a costume, and many thanks go to everyone for their incredibly positive feedback! Also, much love goes to Robert Gregg Barker for the improptu photoshoot!"

Fashion: Wizard of Oz Reimagined

The Dublin-based team "Harmless Creatures" (Sadhbh Doherty and Clare Geraghty) created these reimagined costumes for the cast of the classic children’s book The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.

This collection of costumes is our personal project and a labour of love. They were brought to life between different jobs and projects we were working on and are the result of much planning, many late nights and an awful lot of grid systems. Each costume took over 40 hours to create using unusual materials and techniques that you won’t see every day of the week.

Merchandise: Cosplay in America

In the past decade, cosplay has exploded in popularity here in the United States. Walk into any anime convention in America and you’ll see fans dressing as their favorite characters from anime, manga, or video games. In 2009, photographer Ejen Chuang travelled to six anime conventions across America to capture this phenomenon. Five months were spent photographing 1,651 cosplayers from coast to coast followed by another six months of editing. The result is a hard bound coffee table book of cosplayers captured at the conventions. US$40
