Fan Film: Star Trek Continues

The fan-made web series Star Trek Continues, directed by Vic Mignogna, picks up of story of the crew of the Enterprise immediately after the end of the original series.  The cast does an admirable job capturing the spirit of the original series and an even better job emulating the look of the series. It's a jarring reminder of just how far consumer-grade technology has come when hobbyists can re-create the experience of what was a cutting-edge network series this well.

This episode, "Pilgrim of Eternity," was written by Mignogna, Steve Frattarola, and Jack TreviƱo, and follows up the original Star Trek episode "Who Mourns for Adonais?" In fact, Michael Forest reprises his original series role as Apollo. And there are a few more surprises in this episode, including a very special guest star. Also, be sure to listen closely to the ship's computer.

Fresh Take: Kathren Janeway

Captain Kathryn Janeway (from Star Trek: Voyager) by alicedear
"I sort of just thought this up one night as I was drifting off to sleep. Rather, I thought of elements that I wanted in this costume. It started off as just a skirt, and then evolved into something much more extravagant, as you'll see below.

The pattern I used was for a '56 dress (Butterick Retro 5813 'C'), and I realized in retrospect that it would have been a hundred times easier to have used the Voyager jumpsuit pattern and modify it to my whim. Oops. :P

I think the hardest part was the different bodice pieces, not to mention working with polyester taffeta (something I vow never to do again, thank you), but really, the whole thing was a much bigger undertaking than I could have imagined. I went into this as a 'just for fun' thing... ha!"

Halloween Costumes: Locutus

There are easier ways to be assimilated into the Borg Collective, but 300 manhours and approximately $800 can fake it well enough. This amazing light-up Evil Jean Luc Picard costume even has a drink holster in the crotchual region, for when cybernetic organisms need a quick cool-down. Check out the full details on the build over at Instructables.

Video: Klingon Gangam Style

The funny ladies behind Comediva have produced this epic parody of Gangam Style — in Klingon! Yes, all the lyrics are in Klingon. LOL, I’ve seen a bunch of Gangam parodies, but this really takes the cake.

Props: Captain's Chair

If there's one website I try to avoid on April Fools Day, it’s Think Geek.  I love their April Fool's Day pranks, but there's always a little part of me that wishes they weren't pranks.  Last year's Apple’s Official Playset was bad enough (I would played the hell out of that thing), but this year's prank is just heart-break.  This Star Trek Captain's Chair would be the bomb!  Imagine how much more fun waiting in line outside the next big product release would be if you has a big inflatable piece of geek bling to rest your tocus in!

Accessory: Crocheted Spock Ears

From Shove Mink of Croshame comes the easy-to-make slip-on Star Trek-inspired Crocheted Spock Ears. She’s even included a pattern for them which she estimates will take half hour to produce.

While we might not be traversing far-off galaxies, transporting ourselves onto to Klingon spaceships, or shuffling off to the holodeck for exasperating Sherlock Holmes RPGs, many of the objects people use today – cell phones, video conferencing, GPS devices, stun guns — were predicted by Star Trek many decades ago.

Well, Christmas has come and gone and you’ve already gotten all the fancy stun guns and tricorders and communicators your heart could desire, so why not try out some of that fabulous Star Trek fashion sense with my pattern for crocheted Spock Ears?
